It's hard to work with a narcissist, but it's even harder to watch him/her do better at work, precisely because of his/her behaviour.
It is quite common for narcissists to be successful in their careers. According to some research, they are usually paid more and more likely to get promoted. It's annoying to see such people succeed, but you might be able to learn a few things from their behaviour. Here are five reasons why these people do well at work. Perhaps you can learn something from this and adopt or partially avoid some of their characteristics.
They "advertise" their achievements
A narcissist will never play it safe or hide any success. Instead, they will exaggerate their accomplishments and exaggerate their role in the company's overall success. Although you can easily tell when they are cocky, others don't realise it so easily. Narcissists are charismatic and can charm people. So some people may be impressed by something that isn't so terrible, precisely because the narcissists presented it that way.
They take big risks
Whether they're trying to achieve something that's never been done before in the history of your business or want to implement a strategy that hasn't worked before, these employees take big risks. And of course, sometimes they succeed. Even when others warn them that they will not succeed, narcissists remain unmoved. They want so much to gain attention for their good work that they will do anything to succeed.
They know when to be nice to their coworkers
The narcissist will not waste time teaching the newcomer about the job or talking to colleagues, unless it will somehow help him in his own career. He knows which colleague or superior to exploit and whom to flatter. According to a 2018 study, people with a "dark personality" (with traits such as narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism) see themselves as superior and that they can enjoy certain privileges. These people flatter others and pretend to like them in order to gain their favour and are ready to take advantage of their fellow human beings. By nature, narcissists lack empathy, so they don't care how others feel or support them. Therefore, they are more likely to use their colleagues to their advantage without feeling bad about who gets hurt in the interim.
They believe in themselves
Many people fall behind because they doubt themselves. But not the narcissists, who think they are the best. The pride they have, helps them achieve their goals.
